Thanks for sharing so tenderly, Mary. I’m wondering—have you ever read Mary Karr’s memoir, The Liar’s Club? A couple incidents she describes correlate strongly to your experience here. It’s one of the most beautiful and terrifying works of art I’ve witnessed.

Christianna - thank you for reading and taking the time to comment. Yes, I have read The Liar's Club and can thank/blame ( ha!) Mary Karr for kicking this whole shebang off! We are close to the same age and grew up with southern parents who struggled with mental health. I agree with your assessment of that book and with the connection between some of our experiences. I heard they are making a Netflix series of The Liar's Club, if so, I'll be there with a giant bowl of popcorn.

Very powerful, Mary! Adults’ out of control is so scary when we’re children (and sometimes even when we’re adults).

Thank you, Gina. Agreed, angry adults who are lost in the fog are not present. Anger + disconnection to reality is frightening. Thank you for taking the time to respond.

I realize I left out the word “anger” between “control” and “is”. Your description of them being in a fog and disconnected is so abt and helpful.
